Dear AdNet Employees, Clients, and Friends,
November is Transgender Awareness Month, an opportunity to celebrate, honor, and stand up for our transgender and gender diverse communities. Transgender Awareness Month coincides each year with Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is celebrated annually on November 20th. The Transgender Day of Remembrance began in Massachusetts in 1998 in response to the tragic unsolved murder of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman and beloved community member, in Allston.
Unfortunately, anti-transgender violence has risen at rapid rates since the first Transgender Day of Remembrance in the late 90s. For transgender Americans, the rapid rise in hate against their community has left them in a constant state of fear and uncertainty. In today’s America, there are bills being proposed and passed each month that put more and more transgender individuals at risk, with transgender youth being the most frequent target of these proposed bills. These include bills preventing trans girls and women from playing on female sports teams, banning trans youth from using bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity, bans on classrooms discussions about LGBTQIA+ issues, and restrictions on gender-affirming medical care for both youth and adults.
Now more than ever, the transgender community needs allies, support, and solidarity. In this month’s episode of Room at the Table, I am joined by Ashley Brundage, a leadership and empowerment expert, and Anne Stoner, a mother of a trans daughter and an HR consultant at AdNet. We discuss the journey of the transgender community, leadership, love, and support, and emphasize the importance of acceptance, understanding, and open conversations to create a more inclusive society. We also address how empowerment leads to positive business outcomes, urging people to focus on the benefits of diversity and inclusion.
