Dear AdNet Employees, Customers, and Friends,
Independence Day means something a little different to each of us. This year, I find myself reflecting on the word independence because it's a privilege that can sometimes be easy to take for granted. To me, independence is the freedom to make our own choices, to express ourselves, to love, to gather with those who matter most, and to feel accepted and included for who we are.
Sometimes we see different perspectives on what freedom and independence should look like. It reminds me how important it is to respect one another's journeys and choices. Perhaps we can each focus on caring for those within our own sphere, extending compassion, and leading with understanding rather than judgment. Imagine what our communities could become if more of our choices were guided by love, kindness, and hope.
I often had conversations about independence with my mom. As she grew older, it was incredibly important to her that she maintain her independence—with just a sprinkle of her famous stubbornness mixed in. 😊 That resilience allowed her to live independently until she was 91, and she continued to enjoy life until she was 98, even as her mobility and memory began to decline.
Around this time every year, my mom would reminisce about the trip we took to Staten Island on the morning of July 4, 1976, to watch the Tall Ships sail by during our nation's Bicentennial celebration. True to form, she had driven there the week before to scout the perfect viewing spot and the night before our adventure, packed a delicious lunch for just the two of us. We couldn’t afford going out to eat and her homemade meals were better than any restaurant. Fifty years later, that day remains one of my favorite memories. As our country celebrates another milestone this Independence Day, I find myself especially grateful for that simple day together—a reminder that some of life's greatest treasures are the moments we share with the people we love.
I was also fortunate to visit Italy around June 2, when the country celebrated Republic Day, commemorating the 1946 referendum in which Italians chose democracy over monarchy. The streets were filled with people simply enjoying one another's company, sharing meals, celebrating traditions, and appreciating their country's history. It reminded me so much of the summer holiday barbecues at my grandparents' house, where family & friends gathered around great food, lots of laughter, and the simple joy of being together. Those memories are never far from my heart this time of year as I create new memories. Most of us will enjoy time away from work to celebrate the Fourth of July. However you choose to spend the holiday, I hope you'll take a moment to reflect on the freedoms that mean the most to you—not only the freedoms we enjoy as a nation, but also the freedom to love, to dream, to help others, and to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
Life isn't always perfect, and there are moments when we wish the world felt a little kinder and more united. Yet I continue to believe that gratitude, compassion, and respect for one another have the power to bring us closer together while we listen to our intuition to attract healthy relationships. As we celebrate this Independence Day, may we appreciate the blessings we have, cherish the memories we create, and continue building communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, joyful, and meaningful Fourth of July.
Best wishes,
Betsy Cerulo
